The anthology Zionism and Empires is the outcome of the work of a research group that functioned at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute in 2010–2011.

The anthology includes studies by the leading researchers in this field whose aim is to bring the empires once again into the discussion of Zionism and in so doing to enrich the research that tries to remove the discussion of Zionism from the narrative of a unique history imprisoned within itself. The book aims to locate the engagement with Zionism within the global imperial matrix as it took shape at the end of the nineteenth century and to think reflexively about the meanings of such a move.

Among the topics that receive special attention in the book are language and historiography, political institutions, management of populations, and models of migration of knowledge.
