"מעולם לא היינו מודרנים" – המלצת קריאה

דווקא בימים אלו מעניין לחזור ולקרוא שני טקסטים שהתפרסמו זה לצד זה בתיאוריה וביקורת 26 (אביב 2005):

שתיים מהדוגמאות הפותחות את המסה של ברונו לאטור, שנכתבה בשנת 1993, נשמעות מוכרות, מוכרות מדי: הדאגה מכך שהחור באוזון מתרחב ועימו גדלה גם הקטסטרופה – ה"פשע נגד האטמוספרה", כפי שהוא מכנה זאת; ואזלת היד למול התפשטותה של מגיפה – במקרה ההוא, נגיף האיידס. הצלילה לתוך הגדרותיו של לאטור את המודרני מתגמלת מאוד, גם אם הטקסט לעיתים מפותל ומורכב.
אולם הקריאה בלאטור מקבלת צורה ייחודית ומרתקת בעיקר לצד הקריאה במאמרו של יהודה שנהב. שנהב לא רק ממקם את לאטור בזמן ובמרחב ומסביר בבהירות את טענותיו, אלא הוא בעיקר מציע לאורו קריאה נחשונית ורחבת יריעה במקרה הציוני. המקרה הציוני איננו ייחודי, אך הוא דוחק אל הקצה את הבו-זמניות של ההכלאה והטיהור המודרניים; הוא כולל בתוכו "הכלאה" קלאסית בין דתיות לחילוניות, ובו בזמן מצפין את ההכלאה בעזרת "טיהור" מתמיד והדגשת ההבחנה בין החילוני המודרני או המערבי ובין הדתי הפרה-מודרני.

גם ממרחק של חמש-עשרה שנה, שבהן נחקר ונכתב רבות על דת, לאומיות וחילון, מאמרו של שנהב נותר רלוונטי, מרתק ומאיר עיניים.

הקריאה בלאטור ובשנהב בעת הזו מאששת את ההבחנה בדבר הפרדוקסים של מה שאנו מכנים "המודרניות" – פרדוקסים שרק הולכים ומתעצמים.
