Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz was a towering scholar and one of the intellectual giants of our times. He combined action with theoretical thought on questions of knowledge, ignorance and power. At the center of his enterprise was the historic project of interpreting the Babylonian Talmud and translating it into Hebrew. With the passing of Rabbi Steinsaltz, we wish to discuss these questions in their intellectual and social contexts, as an opening to the broader questions of religious, gender, political, and cultural hierarchies. We will discuss his work from a philosophical, historic, and contemporary perspective, in reference to changes in the approach to knowledge and its restriction within the Jewish world and outside of it.
