Prof. Aviad Hacohen

Prof. Aviad Hacohen is the president of the Sha’arei Mishpat Academic College and served as the dean of its Law School for about a decade. He is a senior lecturer in constitutional law and Jewish law in the Faculty of Law of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and in the Faculty of Law at Bar-Ilan University. He holds an LLB (1989), an LLM (2003, cum laude) and a PhD (2003, summa cum laude) from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Prof. Hacohen’s main research interests include: constitutional and administrative law, Jewish civil law, religion and state, the Jerusalem Talmud, and the responsa literature.
Prof. Hacohen has written and edited hundreds of books, articles, and studies. He is the former editor-in-chief of the Official Supreme Court Opinions of the State of Israel and a member of the editorial board of The Yearbook of Jewish Law, Machanayim, Sha’arei Mishpat, Masechet, and Zehuyot.
Prof. Hacohen served as a consultant to the Codification Commission of the Ministry of Justice in Israel. Since 1990 he has been a member of the committee on legal terms at the Academy of the Hebrew Language. He founded and headed Mosaica – the Institute for the Study of Religion, Society, and State.
In addition to his academic activity he is an active lawyer, a member of the oversight committee of the Association for Public Law, director and chair of the logistics committee of Taglit-Birthright Israel.
He clerked for the vice president of the Supreme Court, Prof. Menachem Elon, and for Adv. Dr. Mishael Cheshin (subsequently vice president of the Supreme Court).
