The research group "The Temple Mount and the Israeli Public Sphere" has been operating at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute since the spring of 2019. The working assumptions of the group are twofold: the first is that the Mount and its status are critical for any possible solution of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict and for the lives of all people living in land; the second, that only part of the spectrum of attitudes towards the Mount within the Israeli public is resonant in the prevalent discourse in the media and in the political field. The group seeks to study the range of attitudes, views, and activities related to the Temple Mount among the Israeli public, those who enter the mount and support Jewish presence there as well as those who oppose this presence, for religious, political, or other reasons. The group plans to publish its findings when its work is completed.
