The psycho-physical problem is the question of the relation between body and mind. This is a fundamental philosophical question that continues to arouse concern, controversy, and curiosity, even some 2,500 years after it was first formulated. In recent years, following the revolution in brain science, the discussion of this question has developed greatly and has expanded to the disciplines of psychology and biology.
At the heart of the book is the magnificent paper of Prof. Yeshayahu Leibowitz, “The Foundations of the Psycho-Physical Problem.” Reading this classic essay is pure pleasure and a delight for Leibowitz admirers. Nobel Prize winner Prof. Daniel Kahneman examines Leibowitz’s words in light of the psychology of environmental perception. Prof. Yoram Yovel follows developments in the field in recent years and examines the mutual relations between the psycho-physical problem and Freudian psychoanalysis.
The three papers together open a window on the world of Leibowitz’s thought and afford a new view of the heart of the problem that engaged him all his life: how the mind is connected to the brain.
