The article seeks to explore the discourse function of “autofiction,” a literary genre enjoying soaring popularity in contemporary culture. It asks about the connection between autofiction and the changes in the current concept of truth, at least from the point of view of the media, which calls our era the “post-truth era” (even though it is doubtful that lies are more prevalent today than they were in the past), and explores how those changes impact autobiography. By examining the historic evolution of the concept of autofiction, since it was coined by the French author Serge Doubrovsky, and discussing the genre’s political, gender and economic aspects as a literary form – influenced among other things by the ideas of researchers and intellectuals such as Franco Moretti, Paul de Man, Marjorie Worthington and Slavoj Žižek – the article suggests that under the cover of the dominance of autofiction in literature, autobiography is becoming a dated literary realm perceived as overly political, lacking literary brilliance, and legally dangerous. The dominance of the term “autofiction” in the discourse is explained among other things by its promise to address fears over the shaky status of truth in the “post-truth” era. The last part of the article is a closer reading of Karl Ove Knausgård’s book “The End,” which is the last in the book series “My Struggle:” this book is not brought as an example of autofiction, even though it is often introduced as such in the media, but rather as an example of the way the illusive relationship between truth and falsehood is expressed in the post-truth era.
