The concluding chapter of French philosopher and musicologist Vladimir Jankélévitch’s book Foregivenss is titled “The Unforgivable.” In the preface to his translation, Guy Jacoby places “The Unforgiveable” in the historical moment in which it was written and develops the paradoxes that arise from the book itself and from its perusal alongside additional texts Jankélévitch dedicated to the subject. Jacoby also discusses the difficulty and the need to read these texts in the contemporary reality in Israel/Palestine, in the face of crimes that present a completely different “scene of forgiveness” than the one in which Jankélévitch operated.
