Loaay Wattad wrote an afterword for Jankélévitch’s essay, in which he juxtaposes the concept of forgiveness in Jankélévitch’s work with that in the writings of Jean Améry and the Egyptian poet Amal Dunqul. Watad questions the relationship between forgiveness and reconciliation, who has the authority to forgive collective crimes, and whether the seemingly impossible act of forgiveness is an abstraction and elevation bestowed upon only one side.
