Crises of the Republic, 29.2.24
Discussion on the book by Hannah Arendt
On the occasion of the Hebrew translation of
Crises of the Republic
Translation: Mickey Zar
The Hebrew translation of Crises of the Republic was published in 2023, a year in which it became clearer than ever how much we need a fundamental and deep clarification of the basic concepts of democracy and the relations between violence and power. In an era of the malignant blurring of boundaries between fact and manipulation and between truth and opinion, a time of conceptual confusion between power and authority and between power and violence, Arendt’s incisive oeuvre sharpens and clarifies key concepts used to this day in contemporary political discussions.
While discussing the roots of the crises with which American politics contended in the 1960s and 1970s, crises whose outcomes resonate in local and global politics to this day, Arendt points out the challenges facing contemporary liberal democracies and what is at stake as we examine their future.
